Sort Lines Alphabetically

An unsorted list is hard to scan, hard to compare, and hard to present. Our free Sort Lines Alphabetically tool takes any pasted list — names, keywords, URLs, inventory — and puts it in clean alphabetical order in one click. No account, no upload; it runs entirely in your browser.

You choose the direction (A to Z or Z to A), whether the sort should ignore letter case (on by default, so “banana” sorts correctly beside “Banana”), and whether blank lines should be dropped from the output. Sorting uses proper locale-aware comparison, so accented characters and numbers behave sensibly instead of landing in weird positions.

Content managers organizing keyword lists, teachers alphabetizing class rosters, and developers sorting configuration entries all get instant results. Copy the sorted list straight to your clipboard or download it as a .txt file for use anywhere.

Sort Lines Alphabetically

Sort any list of lines into alphabetical order, A to Z or Z to A.

How to use

  1. Paste your list into the text box, one item per line.
  2. Pick Ascending (A-Z) or Descending (Z-A).
  3. Leave “Case insensitive” ticked for natural ordering, or untick it for strict character-code sorting.
  4. Leave “Remove empty lines” ticked to drop blank lines from the output.
  5. Click “Sort lines”, then copy the result or download it as a .txt file.

FAQs

What is the difference between case-sensitive and case-insensitive sorting?

Case-insensitive (the default) sorts by the word itself, so “apple” and “Banana” order naturally. Case-sensitive sorts by character code, which puts all uppercase words before lowercase ones — useful when that distinction matters, confusing otherwise.

How are numbers and special characters sorted?

The tool uses locale-aware comparison, so numbers sort numerically within words and accented characters sort near their base letters rather than being dumped at the end.

Can I sort a comma-separated list instead of one-per-line?

Not directly — replace the commas with line breaks first (our case converter and text tools can help reformat), then paste the one-per-line list here.
